Hydrotherapy literally means the therapeutic use of water. Water acts as a natural stimulus to our body as it increases energy, resistance to disease and improves body awareness.
The therapeutic qualities of water have a positive effect on the mind and body. Its ability to promote relaxation is well established. It can be used effectively, as heat, steam, cold, or in a whirlpool. Some examples of commonly used hydrotherapy are:
- ice packs or cold compresses to reduce swelling and relieve congestion
- hot compresses to relieve pain after swelling goes down
- whirlpool baths to rehabilitate injured muscles
- alternate hot and cold showers to stimulate the immune system
- inhalation of steam to reduce the discomfort of sore throats, colds
- half baths to treat problems of the pelvic area
- exercising in a swimming pool to lower the risk of bone or muscle injury
- hot tubs for relaxation and stress reduction.
